What You Need To Know About Vintage Westinghouse Vacuum Cleaners
The vintage Westinghouse vacuum cleaners of the 1950's are a true reflection of the time. A look, for instance, at the 1952 model looks like something right out of Flash Gordon. A large chrome colored tank, it is reminiscent of many sci-fi movies of the time and was popular.
Television Legend
The vintage Westinghouse vacuum is actually a part of television history as well. In the I Love Lucy episode entitled "Handy Dandy Vacuum Cleaner," it is the model that Lucy tries to sell. After spending an entire day of trying to sell the historical vacuum cleaner, she uttered one of her most famous lines from the show: "They just reported the death of another salesman!"
Product In Place
The vintage Westinghouse vacuum, it seems, was part of some early product placement it in the I Love Lucy show. Lucille ball, at one time, had a Hoover contract. In many episodes of the show, though, she can be seen clearly using a Westinghouse at times. Other times, though, she is seen very obviously using and showing off a Hoover.
By 1945, Westinghouse had shut down their line of vacuum cleaners, though. Having introduced them first in 1910, they were at one time one of the broadest lines of vacuum cleaner. They serviced the residential, commercial, and industrial markets in full. As successful as anyone, the company eventually went on to concentrate on other markets like air conditioners and fans.
Overall, the Westinghouse vacuum cleaners are historical. Though no longer around like much of their competition, they were a part of the development that has brough the vacuum cleaner industry where it today.
