Cleaning Your Oil Furnace

by

It is a well known fact that there is more maintenance required for an oil furnace than a gas furnace. It is better to keep your oil furnace well looked after so that you can ensure it lasts longer. The life expectancy of your furnace will be prolonged if you clean it each and every year. It can be a quite messy job although it is not very difficult.

The power supply should be disconnected before you begin. You will then need to remove the burner assembly which is where the electrodes are located. In order to get instructions specific to your furnace you should check the user manual. The next thing to do is to replace the nozzle with a new one making sure that the spray pattern is still the same.

Any oil or soot can then be removed from the assembly by giving it a complete wipe down. The electrodes will have to be inspected for cracks in the insulators and if any are present they should be replaced. Before inspecting the electrodes though, you should firstly gap and position them. You will need a special tool to do this as doing it without it could result in fires or an explosion if they are not gapped correctly.

You will also have to wipe down the oil pump, air passages, transformer and its electrodes and the cage on the combustion blower. After these have all been wiped, you can reassemble the furnace and get it going again. It should start instantaneously and very quietly

Although it is very important to clean your oil furnace regularly to prolong its life, it is even more important to make sure that it is cleaned properly. If you want to do it yourself you will find instructions on how to carry out this job in your instruction manual. But if you feel that you cannot carry out this job properly it might be a good idea to have a professional come each year to do it.

Getting the home heated up during winter can be very expensive. Gas and electricity are very expensive today, with no signs of prices coming down. Clever people are switching to heating oil as a fuel though. When they do they always need their tanks filled with Boilerjuice to ensure they never run out.
