That is when a new company called Rexair began marketing a cleaner that used an invention known as a separator to create a vacuum cleaner without a bag. This was the idea of Leslie H. Green. The device used water as a way to separate airborne dust particles from the atmosphere. The product was met with great success since it not only cleaned carpets, but also the air. It was a relief for those suffering from hay fever and asthma as well as other allergies.

In 1955, the Rexair company put out a vacuum that executives loved so much they called it the Rainbow. In 1959, the company was bought by Sanders and Associates who made it their business to promote and develop the Rainbow Opportunity that was the rainbow vacuum. That was the birth of rainbow vacuum cleaners.
